Kelp DAO Shifts rsETH Messaging to Chainlink CCIP

Protocol replaces LayerZero after cross chain infrastructure failure

SUMMARY

Kelp DAO is migrating the cross chain messaging layer of rsETH to Chainlink CCIP after attributing disruptions to LayerZero infrastructure issues. The move targets interoperability functions, not the token itself. It aims to improve reliability and reflects growing focus on stable cross chain solutions in DeFi.

Kelp DAO has announced that it will migrate the cross chain messaging layer for its rsETH token to Chainlink CCIP, following a disruption that the protocol attributes to a failure in LayerZero’s infrastructure.

The issue impacted the functioning of rsETH, a liquid restaking token tied to Ethereum based staking strategies, particularly in processes that rely on cross chain communication such as minting and bridging. According to Kelp DAO, the disruption was caused by instability in LayerZero’s messaging system, which is used to transmit data across different blockchain networks.

In response, the protocol has decided to replace LayerZero with Chainlink’s Cross Chain Interoperability Protocol CCIP for handling these operations. The migration specifically targets the messaging and interoperability layer, rather than the core token or its underlying smart contracts.

Kelp DAO stated that adopting Chainlink CCIP is intended to improve the reliability and security of its cross chain processes. By switching infrastructure providers, the protocol aims to reduce dependency on a single system that previously experienced operational issues.

The incident highlights the importance of cross chain infrastructure within the DeFi ecosystem, where many protocols rely on third party solutions to enable communication between networks. When these systems encounter failures, they can disrupt key functions such as asset transfers, staking operations, and liquidity flows.

While Kelp DAO attributed the disruption to LayerZero, it did not report any direct exploit or loss of funds tied to the incident. Instead, the problem appears to have been related to infrastructure reliability, affecting the performance of services built on top of the messaging layer.

The decision to transition to Chainlink CCIP reflects a broader industry trend of evaluating and upgrading interoperability solutions as protocols scale. Chainlink has positioned its CCIP offering as a secure and robust framework for cross chain communication, which may appeal to projects seeking improved stability.

The migration process is expected to involve technical adjustments to integrate rsETH operations with the new messaging system. However, Kelp DAO has not provided a detailed timeline for the full transition.

This development underscores the growing complexity of DeFi architectures, where protocols depend on multiple layers of infrastructure. Ensuring the reliability of these components has become a critical factor in maintaining user trust and system performance.

As Kelp DAO moves forward with the transition, the outcome will likely be closely monitored by the crypto community, particularly as cross chain solutions continue to play a central role in decentralized finance.
