Quick Summary
Ethereum Foundation prioritises higher gas limits and protocol scaling for 2026.
Roadmap includes usability improvements and cross-chain interoperability.
The Ethereum Foundation has published its 2026 protocol priorities, laying out an updated framework for advancing the core Ethereum network toward higher capacity, improved usability, and stronger resilience. The strategy, organised into three main tracks, Scale, Improve User Experience, and Harden the L1, highlights a coordinated effort to raise the gas limit beyond 100 million, refine core scaling parameters, and enhance network security and post-quantum readiness through ongoing research and development.
Under the Scale track, developers are expected to continue integrating Layer 1 execution improvements with expanded data blob scalability, a shift seen as essential for increasing transaction throughput and reducing congestion on the base layer. This pathway includes work on ePBS enhancements and further adjustment of blob parameters, which together will support the network’s ability to handle more computation per block while preparing for major upgrades such as Glamsterdam targeted for deployment in the first half of 2026 and Hegotá, expected later in the year.
The Improve User Experience track emphasises initiatives like native account abstraction and cross-chain interoperability, measures designed to simplify interaction with Ethereum’s ecosystem and foster smoother integration with Layer 2 solutions. By prioritising usability alongside performance, the foundation aims to lower barriers for developers and end users alike, a shift that could support broader adoption as decentralized applications evolve.
Security remains a core theme across the roadmap. Under the Harden the L1 track, the foundation will concentrate on strengthening the protocol’s resistance to censorship, improving network resilience, and advancing work on post-quantum security mechanisms. As quantum computing advances, crypto protocols face potential future vulnerabilities, and this emphasis reflects a broader industry trend toward future-proofing critical infrastructure. These efforts complement earlier research initiatives that have already mobilised teams focused on quantum-resistant cryptography and other defensive primitives.
A key technical ambition outlined for 2026 is the continued push to increase the Ethereum gas limit to 100 million and above. The gas limit a protocol parameter that defines how much computation can be included in each block has effectively doubled over recent development cycles, and raising it further is seen as important for supporting a growing volume of smart contract activity, DeFi usage, and onchain transactions. These adjustments are being pursued carefully to balance performance with network decentralisation and validator resource requirements.
For the broader Ethereum market, this roadmap signals a continuation of long-term efforts to scale the network and enhance foundational capabilities while addressing emerging risks such as quantum threats and evolving interoperability needs. While such technical priorities may not have an immediate impact on price action, they reinforce confidence in Ethereum’s trajectory as a robust settlement layer and hint at sustained innovation that could attract developers, institutional participants, and protocol builders. Sentiment around these developments is neutral to positive, reflecting optimism about infrastructure progress tempered by the technical complexity of major base-layer upgrades.
