Bank plans to enable Ripple's stablecoin as trading collateral through an LMAX Group integration

Quick Summary
Standard Chartered launched institutional custody for RLUSD on the XRP Ledger
Ripple and LMAX plan to enable RLUSD as trading collateral
Standard Chartered has launched institutional custody services for Ripple USD (RLUSD), expanding the stablecoin's access to traditional financial infrastructure. Announced on October 12, 2026, the service supports RLUSD issued on the XRP Ledger (XRPL) and is available to eligible institutional clients through the bank's Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) branch, regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority. The launch adds banking-grade custody to Ripple's efforts to expand the use of its dollar-backed stablecoin in institutional markets.
The bank is also working with Ripple and LMAX Group to enable RLUSD as eligible collateral for certain LMAX products. Under the proposed arrangement, institutions could use the value of their RLUSD holdings to support trading activities without transferring the underlying tokens directly to the trading venue. Instead, Standard Chartered would hold the assets in custody and mirror the eligible collateral value to LMAX Group.
This structure is intended to address a key operational challenge for institutional digital asset markets: how to use assets for trading while maintaining custody with a separate financial institution. Moving tokens between custodians, exchanges and trading platforms can introduce transfer delays, operational complexity and counterparty exposure. A collateral-mirroring arrangement could reduce the need for direct transfers while allowing institutions to retain custody through a regulated banking provider.
The planned integration builds on an existing relationship between Ripple and LMAX Group, announced in January 2026. That partnership aimed to expand RLUSD's role across LMAX's institutional trading infrastructure, including its use for collateral and cross-asset trading. The collaboration reflects an effort to make stablecoins more useful within professional trading environments rather than limiting them to crypto transfers and exchange-based trading.
RLUSD is a US dollar-backed stablecoin issued by Ripple. Like other fiat-backed stablecoins, it is designed to maintain a value close to one U.S. dollar while enabling transfers using blockchain infrastructure. Its potential use as trading collateral could allow institutions to deploy dollar-denominated digital assets across trading activities without first converting them into traditional bank deposits or moving them through multiple platforms.
However, the collateral integration is not yet fully operational. Standard Chartered said the additional capabilities remain subject to final documentation, successful testing, applicable laws and regulations, internal approvals and jurisdictional readiness. The bank has announced the custody service as live, but the expanded collateral arrangement should be treated as a planned capability until the remaining requirements are completed.
For Standard Chartered, the move adds another component to its expanding digital asset business. The bank has been developing institutional custody and related services across multiple financial centres, including the United Arab Emirates and Luxembourg. Its partnership with LMAX Group also extends beyond stablecoin custody, with both firms working to connect regulated banking services with institutional digital asset trading infrastructure.
For Ripple, the development could broaden RLUSD's potential use in institutional finance. Stablecoins are increasingly being considered for collateral management, settlement and cross-border financial operations because they combine dollar-denominated value with blockchain-based transfer capabilities. Yet adoption will depend on institutional demand, regulatory requirements, liquidity and whether the proposed integration delivers practical benefits compared with existing collateral arrangements.
The announcement does not directly change XRP's token economics or establish that RLUSD adoption will automatically increase demand for XRP. RLUSD operates on the XRP Ledger, but RLUSD and XRP are separate assets with different functions. The immediate development concerns custody and the potential use of a stablecoin as collateral, rather than a change to XRP's role in the network.
