Quick Summary
Crypto liquidations reached $1.09 billion in 24 hours
Short-term holders transferred 55,600 BTC to exchanges at a loss
Bitcoin faced renewed selling pressure on October 8 as its price dropped to $80,350, triggering nearly $1.1 billion in cryptocurrency liquidations over 24 hours. The sell-off pushed Bitcoin to its lowest level since September 18 and intensified concerns about whether the market could maintain its broader recovery structure. The decline also coincided with a sharp increase in Bitcoin transfers to exchanges by short-term holders who were moving coins at a loss.
Data from CoinGlass showed that total crypto liquidations reached approximately $1.09 billion in the 24 hours leading up to 10:00 a.m. UTC on Friday. Long positions accounted for around $1.05 billion of the total, indicating that leveraged traders betting on rising prices bore most of the losses. When the market moves against leveraged positions, exchanges may automatically close them once margin requirements are no longer met, adding to selling pressure and accelerating price declines.
Bitcoin subsequently recovered from its low and traded around $82,500, a level that has become important for technical market watchers. The area had previously served as a breakout point for an inverse head-and-shoulders pattern associated with Bitcoin's earlier recovery. However, analyst Rekt Capital warned that Bitcoin was struggling to reclaim this level as support. A weekly close below approximately $82,500 could weaken the bullish technical structure and potentially return BTC to its broader accumulation range.
Another factor contributing to market uncertainty was the reported movement of more than 12,000 BTC previously confiscated by the US government. Transfers of seized cryptocurrency do not automatically mean that the assets will be sold, but they can create uncertainty among traders concerned about potential additional supply entering the market. The timing of these movements added to selling pressure as Bitcoin was already struggling to maintain support.
Onchain data revealed further signs of stress among newer Bitcoin investors. CryptoQuant contributor Amr Taha reported that short-term holders sent approximately 55,600 BTC to exchanges at a loss on October 8. Short-term holders are generally defined in this analysis as entities that have held their Bitcoin for up to six months. Moving coins to exchanges at prices below their previous acquisition levels can indicate that investors are preparing to exit losing positions, although an exchange deposit does not prove that the coins were sold.
The reported volume of loss-making transfers was particularly notable because it exceeded a comparable reading from June 26, when Bitcoin traded below $60,000. At the time of the latest data, Bitcoin remained more than 36% above the price recorded during that June episode. The comparison suggests that some recent buyers were experiencing significant losses despite Bitcoin's higher overall price level.
Heavy loss-driven transfers can have two different implications for the market. In the near term, they may reflect capitulation and continued selling pressure, especially if holders follow through by selling their assets. However, periods of concentrated selling can also exhaust weaker holders and reduce the amount of supply likely to be sold during subsequent declines. Whether this becomes a recovery signal depends on demand returning and Bitcoin stabilizing above important technical levels.
The immediate outlook remains uncertain. Bitcoin needs to establish stronger support around the $82,500 area while the market absorbs the impact of liquidations and potential selling from short-term holders. A sustained recovery could indicate that buyers are absorbing the available supply, while another breakdown could increase the risk of further downside. For now, the combination of large leveraged losses and elevated exchange transfers points to a market under pressure rather than a confirmed reversal.
