Quick Summary

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a 13-day outflow streak totaling $4.4 billion.

BlackRock's IBIT led withdrawals, accounting for roughly $3.3 billion, or 75% of all outflows.

U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds have now recorded outflows for thirteen consecutive trading sessions, shedding a combined $4.4 billion in investor capital as the leading cryptocurrency tumbled roughly 21% from its mid-May highs. The prolonged redemption streak has emerged as one of the most closely watched indicators of institutional sentiment in the digital-asset space.

BlackRock Leads the Wave of Withdrawals

BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) bore the heaviest burden of the outflow cycle, accounting for approximately $3.3 billion of the total withdrawals. That figure represents roughly 75% of all redemptions recorded during the period, according to data compiled by Farside Investors. Fidelity's Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) ranked second with $456.6 million in net outflows, followed by Grayscale's Bitcoin Trust ETF (GBTC) at around $303.6 million.

Over the trailing 30-day period, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs collectively shed 51,726 BTC, equivalent to nearly $5 billion in asset value. As of Tuesday, IBIT remained the largest fund by holdings with approximately 786,800 BTC, followed by FBTC at 181,770 BTC and GBTC at 146,400 BTC.

Analysts Divided on the Root Causes

Julio Moreno, head of research at CryptoQuant, described the current demand contraction as the sharpest monthly decline since May 2022, noting that overall demand had dropped by approximately 501,000 BTC over the past month. The scale of the retreat draws unfavorable comparisons to the period immediately following the collapse of the Terra/Luna ecosystem.

Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas offered a contrarian perspective, asserting that institutional long-term holders, including major Bitcoin ETF providers and Strategy's Michael Saylor, have remained net accumulators throughout the selloff. Balchunas attributed the selling pressure to early Bitcoin adopters rather than newly arrived institutional participants.

Ki Young Ju, founder of CryptoQuant, framed the activity as a supply rotation from early holders and miners toward U.S. institutions. He argued the transition could reinforce long-term structural demand for Bitcoin, even as short-term price action remains under pressure from leverage and derivatives activity.

Structural Resilience Noted Despite Volatility

Geoffrey Kendrick, head of digital assets research at Standard Chartered, noted that aggregate Bitcoin ETF holdings have remained broadly stable since February, suggesting the funds retain greater structural resilience than market observers had anticipated. Kendrick flagged Strategy's recent 32 BTC sale as a reputational complication, describing the timing as unfortunate given the prevailing market weakness.

Bitcoin was trading near $63,400 at time of publication, down from approximately $80,000 at the start of the outflow cycle. Whether the prolonged redemption trend marks a deeper inflection point or a temporary consolidation phase remains a subject of significant debate among traders and institutional allocators alike.
