Bitcoin Pushes Toward $87K as Liquidity Wall Shifts
Buyers cleared major sell orders, but ETF demand remains a key confirmation signal

Quick Summary
Bitcoin reached $86,857 after clearing major sell orders
Short liquidations exceeded $120 million within 24 hours
Bitcoin moved toward $87,000 after buyers broke through a significant concentration of sell orders around $85,000, shifting the market's immediate liquidity structure higher. BTC reached $86,857 on Bitstamp, its highest level since September 23, before retreating below $86,000. The move followed a period of range-bound trading in which substantial ask liquidity had limited Bitcoin's upside.
Market data indicated that the earlier sell-side barrier around $85,000 was absorbed as buyers pushed through the available liquidity. Glassnode said reduced ask liquidity above the previous resistance area could allow Bitcoin's price to move more quickly. Earlier in the week, more than $30 million in sell orders had appeared around $85,700, creating a significant obstacle for buyers.
The breakout also changed the location of important liquidation levels. CoinGlass data showed a concentration of potential liquidations above $87,300, meaning the area immediately above Bitcoin's latest local high could become another important point of market activity. Short positions worth approximately $122 million were liquidated over the 24 hours covered by the report, while total cryptocurrency liquidations reached roughly $210 million.
Short liquidations can reinforce an upward move because traders holding losing short positions may be forced to buy Bitcoin to close their positions. This creates additional buying pressure as the market rises. However, liquidation-driven momentum does not necessarily demonstrate that broader spot demand has strengthened. The distinction is important because Bitcoin can experience a sharp move when leveraged positions unwind even without a comparable increase in longer-term investment flows.
Another important level is around $86,000, which Glassnode identified as the aggregate breakeven area for investors in U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds. Holding above this level could keep the recent breakout structure intact, while a move back below it would weaken the immediate upside setup. The market therefore remains sensitive to whether Bitcoin can maintain its gains after clearing the earlier liquidity barrier.
ETF demand provides another measure of whether the move has broader support. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $102.7 million in net inflows on October 1, according to Farside Investors. BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust recorded about $195 million in inflows, although outflows from other funds reduced the overall daily figure.
Those inflows are constructive, but they remain substantially below the stronger demand seen earlier in September. Daily ETF inflows reached approximately $999 million on September 21, the highest level in almost a year, while the following day also produced substantial inflows. Glassnode said a sustained Bitcoin breakout accompanied by stronger trading volume and renewed ETF demand would provide greater confirmation that the move has broader market support.
The current setup therefore combines improving order-book conditions, short liquidations and renewed ETF inflows, but the strength of each signal differs. The removal of sell-side liquidity has allowed Bitcoin to advance, while forced short closures may have amplified the move. At the same time, ETF demand has returned but has not yet reached the levels seen during the strongest September inflows.
For the Bitcoin market, the next phase will depend on whether buyers can hold the recent gains and push through the liquidity and liquidation concentrations above $87,000. A sustained move supported by stronger spot and ETF demand would provide a stronger indication of underlying market participation than a rally driven primarily by short liquidations.
