Quick Summary
Terraform Labs administrator sues Jane Street for alleged insider trading.
Complaint claims confidential info was used to front-run critical trades.
The administrator winding down Terraform Labs has filed a lawsuit in a U.S. federal court against high-frequency trading firm Jane Street Group, alleging that the company and several key personnel engaged in insider trading that worsened the collapse of the Terra ecosystem. The complaint, brought by Todd Snyder, claims that Jane Street used non-public information obtained from Terraform insiders to execute front-running trades that enabled the firm to profit and may have accelerated the fall of TerraUSD (UST) and its sister token LUNA in May 2022.
According to the lawsuit, Jane Street’s involvement did not begin until early 2022, when a former Terraform intern reconnected with his previous colleagues and created a private communication channel that allegedly served as a conduit for material non-public information. The complaint says that, on May 7 2022, Terraform withdrew 150 million TerraUSD from a liquidity pool without publicly disclosing the move, and within minutes a wallet linked to Jane Street executed a large withdrawal of 85 million TerraUSD, enabling the trading firm to trade ahead of broader market participants. Snyder asserts that these actions not only granted Jane Street privileged profit opportunities but also intensified selling pressure in a critical period when UST’s peg was breaking down.
Jane Street has responded to the allegations by calling the lawsuit “baseless” and “opportunistic,” characterising it as an attempt to extract money from a firm already severely impacted by a broader case of fraud and misrepresentation within Terraform’s management. The firm’s defence emphasises that the 2022 collapse was the result of systemic failures within Terraform’s protocol and leadership, rather than market manipulation by external actors.
The collapse of the Terraform ecosystem, which included the algorithmic stablecoin UST and the Luna token, resulted in roughly $40 billion in market losses and triggered widespread fallout across the crypto industry, including the failures of several lenders and trading firms. Terraform ultimately filed for bankruptcy in 2024, and co-founder Do Kwon was sentenced to prison for fraud connected to the ecosystem’s collapse.
Snyder’s lawsuit seeks damages, disgorgement, and interest from Jane Street and several of its executives and employees, highlighting alleged misappropriation of confidential information and claims of market manipulation that may have contributed to the rapid implosion of Terra’s digital assets. If successful, the litigation could set a legal precedent for how insider trading claims are handled in the context of cryptocurrency markets, particularly regarding the use of confidential information from insiders in digital asset trading.
For investors and broader market participants, this development underscores the ongoing legal and regulatory scrutiny surrounding one of the most consequential collapses in crypto history and highlights enduring concerns about market fairness, transparency, and compliance.
Sentiment around this lawsuit appears negative, reflecting the potential for increased legal uncertainty and reputational risk in crypto trading practices, especially if courts find that established trading firms exploited confidential insights to batter token values during a critical period.
