Visa Pilots Private Stablecoin Settlement on Blockchain Network
Visa and Brale explore private stablecoin settlement on Canton Network.

Quick Summary
Visa and Brale have launched a proof of concept on the Canton Network to assess whether private stablecoin settlement can meet the performance and compliance standards financial institutions require.
Canton Network is designed so that only transaction participants and authorized regulators can access deal data, enabling atomic settlement across tokenized assets while preserving strict confidentiality.
Visa has partnered with digital asset infrastructure firm Brale to run a proof-of-concept test on the Canton Network, examining whether private blockchain settlement can deliver the confidentiality, performance and compliance standards that financial institutions currently expect from legacy systems.
The initiative focuses on a fundamental challenge for institutional stablecoin adoption: conducting large-scale payment and settlement activity without exposing counterparty identities, transaction flows and commercial relationships to the public blockchain. Unlike open networks, Canton is engineered so that only the parties involved in a transaction and authorized regulators can view specific deal data, while still enabling atomic settlement across tokenized assets, cash-like instruments and other financial contracts.
Privacy as a Foundational Requirement
Ben Milne, chief executive of Brale, said institutions are increasingly seeking the efficiency advantages of stablecoins while retaining governance, risk management and regulatory oversight. He argued that privacy is likely to become a foundational requirement for most institutional stablecoin use cases, as the scale of settlement activity inherently demands confidentiality around counterparties and commercial relationships.
A Visa spokesperson said one of the key goals of the proof of concept is to determine whether privacy-enabled infrastructure can deliver the performance, compliance standards and operational continuity financial institutions expect from existing settlement systems. The test will assess how Canton's privacy architecture can support faster and more programmable settlement, while enabling firms to retain strict control over the visibility of sensitive transaction data.
Banking Sector Faces Structural Pressure From Stablecoins
The timing of the initiative reflects a broader competitive pressure building within the traditional banking sector. S&P Global has warned that stablecoins could threaten a portion of banks' payments income and shift funding away from insured retail deposits toward more concentrated wholesale balances over time. Institutions that issue stablecoins or tokenized deposits themselves may, however, capture new fee and funding opportunities in the process.
This dual dynamic is driving large financial institutions to investigate privacy-preserving settlement networks capable of supporting GENIUS-style payment stablecoins and tokenized deposits. By participating in this proof of concept, Visa is positioning itself at the intersection of institutional stablecoin infrastructure and the growing demand for programmable, privacy-first payment rails.
Broader Institutional Momentum in Blockchain Settlement
The Visa-Brale collaboration is part of a wider wave of institutional interest in blockchain-based settlement infrastructure. The Clearing House, backed by JPMorgan Chase, Citibank, Bank of America and other major US banks, is separately preparing to launch a tokenized deposit network by 2027. Together, these initiatives suggest that the financial industry is moving decisively toward blockchain settlement, with privacy and regulatory compliance serving as the critical design criteria rather than afterthoughts.
For Brale and Canton, the partnership with a global payments network of Visa's scale provides a significant validation of the Canton Network's privacy architecture and its readiness for real-world institutional use. The outcome of the proof of concept is expected to inform how the broader industry approaches the design of next-generation settlement infrastructure as stablecoin regulation advances globally.
