Quick Summary
Crypto VC funding fell to $659 million across 63 rounds in April 2026, a 74% drop from the $2.6 billion recorded in March, marking the lowest monthly total since July 2024.
DeFi protocols led deal activity with 12 funding rounds, followed by blockchain services and crypto-linked projects with eight rounds each, according to CryptoRank data.
Venture capital investment in the cryptocurrency sector fell sharply in April 2026, dropping to $659 million across 63 funding rounds, its lowest monthly total since July 2024. The figure represents a 74% decline from the $2.6 billion raised across 84 rounds in March, according to data from CryptoRank, and brings total year-to-date investment to $5.64 billion.
Sharpest Monthly Decline in Recent Memory
The April total is the weakest monthly fundraising figure since July 2024, when crypto projects raised $622 million across 132 rounds. The contraction suggests that venture investors have grown increasingly selective as crypto markets remain under pressure, with weaker liquidity and reduced risk appetite weighing on dealmaking across the sector.
Monthly VC funding has been on a downward trajectory since October 2025, when crypto projects attracted $3.84 billion across 127 rounds. Since that peak, the global crypto market capitalization has contracted by approximately 37%, according to CoinGlass data, compressing valuations and dampening investor enthusiasm for early-stage bets.
DeFi Leads Deal Activity Despite Broader Slowdown
Despite the overall slowdown, decentralized finance protocols attracted the most deal activity in April, logging 12 funding rounds. Blockchain services and artificial intelligence-linked crypto projects followed with eight rounds each, according to CryptoRank. The concentration of activity in these categories reflects continued investor interest in infrastructure and productivity-oriented projects, even as speculative capital retreats.
GSR and L1 Digital Among Most Active Investors
Crypto market maker GSR's venture arm was the most active investor of the month, participating in four rounds. These included a $3.5 million seed round in DeFi protocol Legend Trade, a $4 million seed round in DeFi protocol 3F, a $1 million pre-seed round in Enhanced Finance, and an undisclosed investment in real-world asset tokenization protocol Libeara.
Zurich-based digital asset investment manager L1 Digital ranked second with three investments, including an $18 million strategic investment in infrastructure provider Squads, a $7.5 million Series A in blockchain services company Oh, and a $5 million seed round in crypto exchange Exponent. Y Combinator, Tether, Animoca Brands, Coinbase Ventures and Kosmos Ventures each participated in three deals during the month.
Outlook Remains Cautious as Markets Seek Direction
The April data underscores a broader recalibration in crypto venture markets following a period of elevated activity in late 2025. With the global market cap still well below its October 2025 highs and macro conditions remaining uncertain, investors appear to be prioritizing capital preservation and selectivity over volume. Whether May brings a recovery in deal flow will depend in large part on whether broader market conditions stabilize and confidence in early-stage crypto ventures is restored.
