Quick Summary
Ireland plans AML standards for crypto related gambling funds.
Gambling regulator will establish requirements for accepting crypto funds.
Ireland is moving to introduce new industry standards for accepting crypto related funds within the gambling sector as part of a broader government effort to strengthen controls against money laundering and terrorist financing. The measure forms part of Ireland’s latest national financial crime strategy and follows a government assessment that identified crypto assets as carrying significant risks related to illicit finance.
Under the planned framework, the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland is expected to develop an industry standard governing how gambling businesses handle funds connected to cryptocurrency activity. The objective is to ensure that operators conduct appropriate due diligence and establish the legitimacy and source of crypto related funds before accepting them. The initiative is scheduled as part of Ireland’s implementation priorities through the second half of 2027.
The policy follows Ireland’s 2026 national risk assessment, which identified crypto assets as presenting very significant money laundering and terrorist financing risks. The government also highlighted potential vulnerabilities involving sanctions evasion, tax compliance and the use of digital assets in corruption. The assessment was Ireland’s first major digital asset risk review in seven years and reflects increased attention from authorities as crypto becomes more integrated into the financial system.
Ireland’s approach also comes as the country strengthens its broader gambling regulatory framework. The Gambling Regulatory Authority began accepting applications for remote and in person betting licences in February 2026, alongside new requirements covering suspicious activity, online gambling accounts and customer protections. The planned crypto funding standard would add another layer of financial crime controls to the sector.
The Central Bank of Ireland has separately identified anti money laundering controls as a major supervisory priority for crypto asset service providers. Its supervisory programme includes monitoring how firms identify and mitigate AML and counter terrorist financing risks, while also examining custody, operational resilience and market abuse. These measures indicate that Irish authorities are increasingly treating crypto related financial crime as a sector wide compliance issue rather than an isolated concern.
For crypto businesses, the development could increase compliance requirements for companies operating around gambling and digital assets in Ireland. At the same time, clearer standards could provide greater certainty for legitimate businesses and reduce the risk that illicit funds enter regulated financial channels. For investors and the broader market, the news is neutral, as the measures primarily concern compliance and financial crime prevention rather than restrictions on crypto ownership or trading.
