Mastercard's new system makes stablecoin transactions as seamless as payments

Quick Summary
Mastercard has unveiled end-to-end stablecoin capabilities, enabling consumers and merchants to transact in stablecoins such as USDC across its global network.
The payments giant is partnering with OKX to launch the OKX Card, linking crypto trading and Web3 activity with everyday spending at millions of merchants worldwide.
Mastercard has announced a comprehensive suite of stablecoin capabilities designed to bring digital currency payments into the mainstream, partnering with crypto exchange OKX, payment processor Nuvei, and stablecoin issuers Circle and Paxos to cover the full range of use cases across its global network.
A New Card for the Crypto Economy
Central to the announcement is the OKX Card, a new product developed in partnership with OKX that links crypto trading and Web3 activity with everyday spending. The card will allow users to pay at merchants across Mastercard's global acceptance network using funds held in crypto wallets, with the conversion handled seamlessly at the point of sale.
Jorn Lambert, Chief Product Officer at Mastercard, said the company sees clear benefits in bringing blockchain and digital assets into mainstream use cases. "To realize its potential, we need to make it as easy for merchants to receive stablecoin payments and for consumers to use them," Lambert said. "We believe in the potential of stablecoins to streamline payments and commerce across the value chain."
Merchant Settlement in Stablecoins
Beyond the consumer-facing card product, Mastercard is enabling merchants to settle transactions directly in stablecoins. Through its collaboration with Nuvei and Circle, merchants will be able to receive payments in USDC, the dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Circle. Paxos will extend this functionality to additional supported stablecoins, including USDP.
The initiative builds on Mastercard's existing infrastructure, including its Multi-Token Network, which was launched in 2023 to facilitate real-time settlements and redemptions of tokenised assets. Ondo Finance became the first provider to bring real-world assets to the network earlier this year.
Stablecoins Move Beyond Trading Venues
Stablecoins, which are cryptocurrencies pegged to stable assets such as the US dollar, have been gradually moving beyond trading venues and into mainstream commerce. The global stablecoin market has grown substantially in recent years, driven in part by increasing regulatory clarity in major jurisdictions including the United States and the European Union.
Mastercard's initiative covers the full range of stablecoin use cases, from wallet enablement and card issuance to merchant settlement and on-chain remittances. The company has previously partnered with crypto exchanges including Kraken, Binance and Crypto.com to allow users to pay with stablecoins via traditional cards.
Simplifying Cross-Border Payments
The announcement also highlights the potential of stablecoins to simplify cross-border payments, a segment where traditional banking infrastructure has long been criticised for high costs and slow settlement times. By enabling on-chain remittances through its network, Mastercard is positioning stablecoins as a practical tool for international money movement.
In 2022, Mastercard launched Crypto Credential, a service designed to simplify sending digital assets across borders using verified usernames rather than complex wallet addresses. The latest stablecoin initiative represents a significant expansion of that earlier effort, extending the company's digital asset strategy from identity verification to full payment settlement.
