Quick Summary
The tokenized real-world asset market has grown from $5.8 billion at the start of 2025 to more than $30.2 billion, a rise of over 420% in roughly 15 months.
Tokenized US Treasurys led the expansion, climbing from $3.9 billion to more than $15 billion, as institutional investors sought compliant onchain access to real-world yield.
The tokenized real-world asset market has recorded one of the most dramatic expansions in the history of blockchain finance, growing from a market capitalization of approximately $5.8 billion at the start of 2025 to more than $30.2 billion as of late April 2026. The 420% surge, tracked by analytics platform RWA.xyz, reflects a structural shift in how institutional capital is being deployed across blockchain infrastructure, with regulatory clarity and the maturation of onchain financial products emerging as the primary catalysts.
Tokenized Treasurys Lead the Expansion
Tokenized US Treasurys have been the standout performer within the broader RWA sector, rising from $3.9 billion at the beginning of 2025 to more than $15 billion. Dominick John, an analyst at Zeus Research, told Cointelegraph that the surge was driven by the appeal of compliant onchain access to real-world yield, effectively turning blockchain rails into a distribution layer for institutional capital. Tokenized commodities, particularly gold, have also gained traction as geopolitical tensions have elevated demand for assets offering continuous liquidity and global access outside traditional market hours.
Regulatory Frameworks Unlock Institutional Participation
Regulatory clarity has played a decisive role in drawing traditional finance institutions into the RWA sector. Europe's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, known as MiCA, has provided a framework that major financial institutions were previously waiting for before committing capital. According to a report from crypto data aggregator CoinGecko, the RWA sector had previously rallied more on speculation than substance, but from 2024 onward, regulatory certainty enabled established players to enter the market with greater confidence. Early experiments have since evolved into best practices, accelerating the pace of tokenization across asset classes.
BlackRock's USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund, launched in March 2024, provided onchain access to short-term US government debt and served as an early proof of concept for institutional tokenization. Fidelity followed in September 2025 with its own tokenized product, the Fidelity Digital Interest Token, further validating the model and signaling that the largest asset managers in the world view tokenization as a durable component of their product strategies.
Next Phase Hinges on Equities and Private Credit
While the current growth cycle has been led by tokenized Treasurys and commodities, analysts caution that sustaining the sector's momentum will require expansion into more complex asset classes. John of Zeus Research noted that the rate of expansion in Treasurys should moderate as the most accessible capital flows have already been allocated. The next significant leg of growth, he said, depends on whether tokenized equities, funds and private credit can scale meaningfully. These categories present greater regulatory and operational complexity but also represent substantially larger addressable markets.
The broader digital asset market is also expected to benefit from the RWA sector's growth. ARK Invest has projected that the total digital asset market could reach $28 trillion by 2030, with tokenized real-world assets identified alongside Bitcoin, decentralized finance and stablecoins as one of the four primary drivers of that expansion. The trajectory of the RWA market over the past 15 months suggests that projection, once considered ambitious, is increasingly within reach.
